Yusuf has been researching on diabetes for the past twelve years and continues to publish landmark scientific papers and ground-breaking discoveries on aberrant pancreatic hormone release in a disease that continues to affect so many in Singapore and around the world. He first described the impact of the gasotransmitter hydrogen sulphide in diabetes, and especially the diabetes vasculature. He worked on paracrine interactions in pancreatic islets and detailed the molecular pathogenesis of islet apolipoproteins, and separately islet resident macrophages in type-2 diabetes. Currently, his laboratory is focused on understanding pre-diabetes, an Asian diabetic phenotype, and specifically the impact of dietary lipids on insulin secretion. He publishes extensively in journals such as PNAS, Cell Reports, Diabetologia, and Diabetes. He is also a co-inventor of a patented oral insulin delivery technology and seeks a future where biologics can be delivered without needles. Apart from teaching Biochemistry and Endocrine Systems to medical students, Yusuf is continuously strengthening the international network of scientists and endocrinologists with emphasis on creating a clinical research nexus between Singapore and international partners. Yusuf is also a spokesperson on various community and media platforms aimed at promoting diabetes awareness.
Yusuf will be part of the Active Lifestyle Nutrition / Protein Innovation / Men’s Health session on Day 2.
